Chandler {Garner Children's Photographer}

Meet Chandler, isn't she beautiful? At the beginning of the year, she came to my house to visit (she's my cousin's daughter) and we goofed off for a little bit. It was so much fun, I love when kids are excited about having their picture taken & will just have fun with me <3

Friday Factuals {2}

1. What is your cleaning style like? If I'm actually cleaning, I get pretty detailed, trying to clean my room, start 20 different things then only halfway finish... it's terrible.
2. What is your favorite thing to add to an outfit to take it from casual to classy? Great accessories. They can seriously make or break an outfit!
3. Do you like stormy weather? Sometimes, I prefer a storm over that nasty cold drizzly grey stuff NC gets...
4. What is your favorite cold treat on a hot day? Icepops.
5. What is your favorite warm treat on a cold day? Vegetable Soup
6. Who is your favorite animated character? That's hard, I watch a lot of anime, but that isn't what the question's really asking, even though anime characters are animated. I'll say Mulan for the sake of people actually knowing who I'm talking about :) {Naruto anyone?}
7. What do you keep your jewelry in? My closet, I have a shelf & part of a wall is covered in cork with earrings & necklaces hanging from it.
8. Do any of the rooms in your house have a theme? No...
9. Do you watch any interior design TV shows – if so, what is your favorite? I love HGTV, I haven't been watching much tv lately, but I watch HGTV when I get the chance. I love Genevive's show, and Sarah's House.
10. When was the last time you did something risk-taking? I'm starting a business, does that count as a risk?

-----------
So it's not Friday, but my internet was being kinda wacko yesterday, so I didn't get a chance to post it :)

I'm working on finishing all of my final projects this weekend {ahead of time! I'm so proud of myself!} and watching an AMAZING class by Bambi Cantrell on lighting & posing, I'm learning so much, it's really awesome!

I have a ton of sessions that I need to blog & a ton coming up really soon, I am so excited about my business right now!

The first two weeks in April, I'll be out of school, my schedule will be very open. If you're interested in booking a session, please email me at jessica@leraphotography.com! I'm going to be having a print sale as well, all product will be on sale for the month of April!

Wednsday! {What's up?}

Hello internet (and my lovely followers <3 ), how are you today? I'm trying to get more consistent with my posting, and not have a mass of posts (like last weekend) and then go forever without updating again, so here's a mid-week update :)

I have some exciting {at least to me} things in the works right now! Some of them are behind the scenes business things {getting my branding polished}, some shoots in the works {there's a newborn in the future too! Possibly more than one actually!}, and I'm also planning a Spring Fling event!

Yep, I'm just so excited about it getting GREEN again, I'm celebrating! And you get the benefits :) Details on that coming soon!

Here's a picture that I took a week or two ago, it's Japanese Cherry Blossom. Please keep Japan and it's people in your prayers ♥ Japan holds a special place in my heart, it hurts my heart to see the people hurting.

Why I do what I do {and LOVE it}

Many of the people in the photography program at my school don't like photographing people. In fact, they disdain it, they would rather take pictures of something that has no emotions, that can't talk back to them. I by no means think bad about them for thinking this way, there is a need for great photographers who are in fields other than portraiture, but I could never consider NOT being a portrait photographer.

I've been thinking a lot lately about why.

Why am I a photography major/photographer? It's a very expensive career, and it isn't considered a necessity to many people.
Why as a christian, I participate in something many people consider vain.
Why do I think people should cover the walls and shelves {fridges, nightstands, dressers, etc. :) } with photography, both of their family as well as other fine art photography {because I love a good still life <3}

And it hit me. In the shower, of course, the shower & right before you fall asleep are always the best times for have revelations.

It says in the bible {Genesis 1:27} that God created human beings in His image. Now, I don't know about you, but I think that God is the most amazing artist. Ever. Of all time. Literally. Have you ever seen a flower, or a sunrise, or a newborn baby? God is an amazing artist, and the last thing he created was humans. If you've ever studied art history, the last works of an artist in his or her career are usually considered their best work.

So we {humans} are God's greatest creation. We. Humans. Not just the tangible body, but our souls, our very spirits. Our emotions, joy, laughter, love, peacefulness. If I can capture those things and show even a tiny fraction of what God sees when he looks at us, the love that he sees, I'm happy. If I can show the amazing artistry of God to other people, I'm happy.

We only get one 'today'. Milestones are milestones because they don't happen everyday. A baby is only new and tiny for a very short period in time. A senior only graduates from high school once. A couple is only engaged once. Milestones and life itself are cause for celebration! I want to get those moments, those emotions, I want to catch them and turn them to something tangible so that you can see them and remember forever. I want to show people {especially women, I'll be honest, I have a passion for showing women that they ARE beautiful} how amazing they are. I love when my clients say 'wow, I didn't even know I could look like that.' I love when I can take the time & focus on my client, get to know them, and catch what it is that makes them who they are.

When one client's mom saw the pictures, and said 'Oh, that is SO my daughter' I knew I had accomplished something beyond simply having technical knowledge and skill. That is what I strive for.

A friend said that if you couldn't find something you like about a person, look harder. Every person is made by God, in his image, so there has to be something amazing about every single person.

I want to show the delightful - the joy of a child, the potential of a senior, the bliss of a couple in love
I want to show the ravishing - the bride the day of her wedding, the pregnant woman who is full of new life
I want to show the entrancing - the tiny new baby, the exchange of vows, the love of siblings

That is Lera, delightful, ravishing, entrancing.

Friday Factuals {1}

So does anyone remember the days of surveys? One friend would do one & it would spread all over xanga/myspace/facebook? I was always fascinated with them, I love tidbits of information & I felt like I was getting a peek into my friends. For close friends, I would read it and nod in agreement, thinking 'oh that is SO her!' and for friends I wasn't as close to, it was awesome to get a better peek into how they thought. I love that they are an archive, how I feel at a specific moment in time. I can go back a few years and look at surveys I filled out when I was young & it reminds me of where I was, my hopes and dreams at that point in time, I can see just how far I have come.

So I want to do the same thing here, I want you {hi there! yes, you!} to get to know me, to get a peek into MY brain, because heaven knows I can be a terrible writer. This is the beginning of Friday Factuals, the weekly peek into the brain of Jessica :)  {and yes, I know it's not Friday. This one's a day late.}

I picked this specific survey up HERE

1. How did your parents decide on your name?
Well, they thought I was going to be a boy (thanks.) and one night my parents were talking about what they would do if I was a girl, and my dad was half asleep saying 'Just Imagine' and it turned into 'Jessica Megan'. It stuck :)
2. Do your initials (First, Middle, Last) spell out anything fun/funny? No, but when if {and by that I mean when} I marry my boyfriend, I'll take up a chunk of the alphabet {JMKL -> JKLM}
3. Did you take your middle name from childhood or did you take your maiden name as your middle name? (If unmarried, what do you plan to do?) I'm making my last name another middle name.
4. Are you or will you name your children thematically (ie. same first letter, all of same origin…) Probably not, but I want my kid(s) to have Japanese middle names {no specific reason other than I love them, & have a fascination with Japan & it's culture. I can't wait to travel to Japan. My heart is hurting for all the people hurt in the earthquake & tsunami yesterday, keep them in your prayers!}
5. Did you decide on baby names as a little girl? Did you stick to them or change your mind? I was obsessed with Isabella for a long time, then Allison Michelle, but I don't have anything super specific now.
6. Does your family have any names that have been passed down through generations? Troy Robert, my brother's name, is a family name.
7. Do you look at the meaning of the name or just the name itself? Sometimes I like a name just because I like it, but if I'm naming a pet or my kids, the meaning of the name is very important to me.
8. Do you name pets with human names (Sally, Henry) or with pet names (Fluffy, Mr. Bo Bo)? I haven't named any of our pets, but I want a cat named Aiko. It means little loved one <3
9. Are there any names that you have an affinity or dislike for based on a childhood experience/someone you once knew? Yeahhhh, there are some names that I have very strong emotions towards... typically lost loved ones. You know, the ones you lose but they're still alive?
10. What are some of your favorite names? Why? I like Ava & Jasper, but that's just because they're pretty... I guess I haven't put too much thought into that... hmmm. I'll probably remember what names I like right before I fall asleep tonight :)

Dan + Kristel

I'm finally catching up! I know I'm super behind in blogging, I still have at least 3 other sessions that I need to blog though...

------------------------

Dan & Kristel were part of my final portfolio for my photography class in school right now, so the majority of these are in black & white at the moment. I have to say though, I am partial to black & white. I adore the timeless feel that it gives <3

Anyways, I had a lot of fun with Dan & Kristel, they were great! They really got where I was going with wardrobe, were ok with being cuddly for me, and just flat out funny! I can't wait until I have another chance to shoot with them :)

I love the progression of this :)
My clients are just the best looking ever
Can't get over these! Love!
I love how into each other they are, so awesome

courtney + john {seniors}

John & Courtney are two close friends of my brother, boyfriend, & I. They are so crazy together, total goofballs & I love it! We had so much fun playing at Lake Wheeler, people probably thought that we were crazy, laughing and goofing off the whole time! Having fun with my clients is the best <3
